The fast-growing Indian smartphone market has caught the attention of everyone. Apart from large multi-nationals like Samsung and Indian manufacturers like Micromax, several new companies are also eyeing this arena. The latest brand to venture in the Indian market is Obi, which has been started by former Apple CEO, John Sculley.
In an interview to CNBC-TV18, Sculley stated that he’ll be investing over 20 million dollars to kickstart the project. He also noted that India is a price-sensitive market and hence the brand will launch smartphones priced between Rs 5,000 to 8,000. Being bullish on the Indian market, he’s hoping the brand will sell around a million units in the first phase itself, and become profitable within five months. The devices will run Android and are expected to launch soon.
The Indian operations of the brand will be headed by Ajay Sharma, with stints at Micromax and HTC in the past.
